Liptov in winter: skiing, warm water and trips

Skiing

Jasná Nízke Tatry

The largest ski resort in Slovakia. You ski on both the north and south sides of Chopok, linked by lifts over the summit. It's about 40 minutes from us by car. If you want to be on the slopes when the lifts open, set off early; at weekends and in school holidays the car parks fill up fast.

Malinô Brdo near Ružomberok

The closest bigger resort, about 25 minutes away. Skiing is between 545 and 1,209 metres, with a chairlift from Hrabovo to Malinné. Good for families and for half a day of skiing when you don't feel like driving to Jasná.

Check lift operation and ski pass prices on the resorts' websites. They change with the snow and the dates.

Warm water in winter

After skiing in Liptov, you don't head for a beer, you head for warm water.

• The Kalameny hot-spring pond is around 33 °C all year and people bathe in it even in the snow. Bathing is free; you pay for parking. There are no changing rooms, so dress and undress quickly. More about the pond
• Gino Paradise Bešeňová, with outdoor pools of water up to 39 °C, 15 minutes from us.
• Tatralandia, with its covered tropical section, 20 minutes from us.

Winter hiking

Veľký Choč is almost always passable, but in winter you need microspikes or crampons. In winter, the route from Valaská Dubová follows the blue and red trails with a secured rocky section; from Lúčky you take the steeper red trail. Routes up Choč

The caves stay around 6 °C all year, so they're a good plan even on a freezing day. Check off-season tour times at ssj.sk. Demänovská valley

The farmstead in winter

• Sýpka, Drevenica and Na Stráni have fireplace heating.
• The Finnish sauna in the yard, €10 per session.
• The cottages have air conditioning that also heats in winter.
• Parking by the cottage is free and cleared of snow in winter.
• A games room with billiards, table tennis and table football for evenings when you don't feel like going out.

Getting here in winter

Winter tyres are a must in Liptov. If you're arriving in the evening, let us know your arrival time. Check-in is from 15:00, or earlier by arrangement.
