Veľký Choč from Lúčky

The highest peak of the Choč Mountains (1,611 m) can be seen from all over Liptov on a clear day. The route from Lúčky is the shortest but steep, and the summit looks out over Liptov, Orava and the Veľká Fatra.

Veľký Choč is a solitary limestone peak on the border of Liptov and Orava. It is 1,611 metres high, and because there is nothing taller around it, the summit has one of the best views in Slovakia: the whole Liptov basin with Liptovská Mara lake, the Western and Low Tatras, the Veľká Fatra and Orava to the north.

The red trail from Lúčky

A red-marked trail leads to the summit from the spa village of Lúčky. It is the shortest route from the Liptov side, but also the steepest: you gain about 970 metres in a few kilometres. According to the Visit Liptov tourism portal, the climb takes just over two hours. With breaks and children, allow closer to three.

  1. Park in Lúčky and find the start of the red trail. Follow the signposts in the village.
  2. The path climbs through forest, past woodland springs and the Žimerová shelter.
  3. At the Vráca saddle you leave the forest and reach the ridge.
  4. The final climb runs along the open ridge to the summit (1,611 m).
  5. Return the same way, or descend another route and arrange a lift.
Our tip

After the descent, stop at the Lúčky waterfall and then at the hot-spring pond in Kalameny. The water is around 33 °C and does wonders for your legs after 970 metres downhill.

What to bring and when to go

  • Start early. Choč is popular and the summit gets busy in summer and at weekends.
  • Layers and a windproof jacket. The summit is bare and windy even in summer.
  • Microspikes or crampons in winter. The trail is almost always passable, but the rocky sections ice up.
  • Water. There is no hut or kiosk at the top.

Where to stay before the hike

From the farmstead in Nižné Malatíny you're in Lúčky in about 15 minutes. In the evening there's the Finnish sauna in the yard and the fireplace in your cottage. For a group of hikers we recommend Drevenica (12 guests); for a smaller group, Na Stráni Cottage.
